Kiyonori Muroga: Editing and Practice

Since the turn of the millennium, Kiyonori Muroga has served as the editor-in-chief of several key platforms in Japanese graphic design, including Idea magazine, publisher Graphic-Sha, and the blog The Graphic Design Review. Through his work in editing, writing, and education, he has profoundly influenced the field of graphic design. During his tenure at Idea Magazine, the publication produced countless celebrated issues. These not only revisited the essential historical contexts of typography but also pioneered interdisciplinary design criticism grounded in contemporary sociology, anthropology, and philosophy. By addressing topics such as geopolitics, free-market economics, and colonial legacies, the magazine expanded the study of graphic design and typography into the realm of visual culture research, a focus Muroga continues to develop today.

This exhibition traces three key phases of Muroga’s career: Idea Magazine, Graphic-Sha, and The Graphic Design Review. It features editorial notes written specifically for the exhibition, along with previously unseen materials such as book cover drafts and manuscripts. Additionally, translated publications will be available on-site as supplementary reading, fostering meaningful dialogue with Taiwanese audiences by bridging linguistic barriers and exploring the possibilities of reading graphic design.
